BA (Honours) Business Management (Marketing)

What do marketing professionals really do? How can you use marketing in non-commercial contexts for social good? What new challenges and opportunities arise on the online and global stage? In this specialist route available in our BA (Honours) Business Management degree, you will develop an interdisciplinary perspective on the management of business organisations and build specialised knowledge and skills in marketing practice. On completion of this degree, you will be equipped with the necessary skills to use and apply marketing techniques and concepts in the workplace, and will acquire a wide range of transferable management skills.

Course details

This degree has three stages, each comprising 120 credits (equivalent to one year's full-time university study). Most students study 60 credits a year, taking on average six years to complete. We recommend that you study Stage 1 over two years as it provides the underpinning knowledge and skills needed for more advanced study at Stages 2 and 3.

If you have little or no knowledge or experience of studying, you may prefer to start your studies with a module as an additional preparatory stage. The credit gained from the Access module will be in addition to the other credit required for the qualification.

Stage 1 (120 credits)

 You’ll gain an introduction to the essential disciplines of business and management; investigating the question ‘What is a business?’ and exploring the functions of human resource management, marketing, accounting, and finance. There’s a wide choice of optional modules to complete this stage – and you’ll be introduced to your specialist subject area if you choose one.

Whether to choose a broad study of business or to focus on accounting, economics, leadership practice, innovation and enterprise or marketing.

 

Stages 2 and 3 (240 credits)

 

Taking a highly practical approach grounded in your own experience, you’ll explore the essential organisational functions of human resources; marketing; operations management; information management; and accounting and finance. You’ll also focus on the fascinating world of strategy. To complete your degree, you’ll deepen your understanding of business areas that are most relevant to you – and of your specialist subject, if applicable.

Accessibility

We make all our qualifications as accessible as possible and have a comprehensive range of services to support all our students. The BA (Honours) Business Management uses a variety of study materials and has the following elements:

·       studying a mixture of printed and online material – online learning resources may include websites, audio/video media clips, and interactive activities such as online quizzes

·       using mathematical and scientific expressions, notation and assorted techniques

·       working in a group with other students

·       using and producing diagrams or screenshots

·       undertaking practical work

·       finding external/third party material online

·       using specialist software.

All qualifications require you to complete learning and assessment activities within a required timescale and according to pre-determined deadlines. You will therefore need to manage your time effectively during your studies and the University will help you to develop this skill throughout your degree. Information on assessment will be available to you at the start of each module.

 Credit transfer

If you have already studied at university level, you may be able to count it towards your Newcastle University qualification – which could save you time and money by reducing the number of modules you need to study. At the Newcastle University, we call this credit transfer.

It’s not just university study that can be considered, you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications such as HNCs and HNDs.

You should apply for credit transfer before you register, at least 4 weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where and when and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

 

Classification of your degree

On successfully completing this course, you’ll be awarded the BA (Honours) Business Management degree. You’ll have the opportunity to attend a degree ceremony. If you choose to specialise – for example, in economics, your degree title will be BA (Honours) Business Management (Economics).

 

The class of degree (first, second or third class honours) depends on your grades at Stages 2 and 3.
